Remember: Cutting boards are tools designed for food preparation, and as such, they are subject to natural wear and tear with regular use. Over time, you may notice signs of wear, including scratches, grooves, and discoloration. These marks are typical and do not affect the functionality or safety of the board. To prolong its lifespan, we recommend regular cleaning, proper maintenance (such as oiling for wooden boards), and avoiding excessive force or improper use.
Try not to cut on your serving boards...
Though most serving and charcuterie boards can be used to cut on, if you want to keep them in 'show quality' - don't cut on them!
By following these tips, you can keep your cutting board looking great and performing well for years to come!
1. Cleaning: After each use, wash your cutting board with warm water and mild soap. Avoid soaking it or putting it in the dishwasher, as this can warp or crack the wood.
2. Drying: Always dry your cutting board thoroughly with a towel after washing. Avoid leaving it wet, as moisture can lead to warping.
3. Oil Regularly: Apply food-safe mineral oil or a cutting board conditioner every few weeks (something like our Saving Salve), or whenever the board looks dry. This helps prevent cracking and keeps the wood hydrated.
4. Avoid Strong Chemicals: Steer clear of harsh detergents, bleach, or any strong chemicals that can damage the wood.
5. Store Properly: Keep your cutting board in a dry area, upright if possible, to allow air circulation. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
6. Use Both Sides: If possible, use both sides of the board to distribute wear evenly.
7. Prevent Staining: For easier cleaning, avoid cutting strongly colored foods like beets or turmeric directly on the board. If stains occur, you can gently scrub with baking soda and water.
For extra durability, dice towers and trays are treated with thin layers of a wipe-on poly. This is a polyurethane finish that can be applied with a cloth to protect wood from water, stains, chemicals, and wear. To clean simply use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap or dish detergent, wringing it out well to avoid excess moisture; for regular cleaning, simply use a damp cloth alone; avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or oily products as they can damage the finish.
